The development of Almaty SuperSki will not harm Almaty's water resources

The development of Almaty SuperSki will not harm Almaty's water resources

Studies conducted by the National Hydrogeological Service Kazhydrogeology, based on the analysis of 30 years of hydrological data (1994–2025), confirm that the water demand of the Almaty SuperSki resort in the Kok-Zhailau area can be met without affecting the region's water balance or Almaty's drinking water supply system.

The small mountain streams located within the project area are not part of Almaty's centralized drinking water supply system.

According to Almaty Su (almatysu.kz), approximately 70% of the city's drinking water comes from groundwater sources, including wells at the Almaty, Maloalmaty and Talgar aquifers, as well as the Kamenskoye Plateau water intake. The remaining 30% is supplied by surface water from the Bolshaya Almatinka, Malaya Almatinka (Small Almaty), Kim-Asar, Kargaly and Aksai rivers.

This means that Almaty's water supply relies primarily on groundwater resources, rather than on the small mountain streams located near the Almaty SuperSki project area. Key Facts • Almaty's annual water consumption: approximately 250 million m³. • Estimated annual water demand of Almaty SuperSki: approximately 1.02 million m³, representing only 0.5% of the city's annual water consumption.

The protection of water resources is one of the project's core principles. Accordingly, Almaty SuperSki incorporates modern controlled water abstraction systems, continuous monitoring of water consumption, and the mandatory maintenance of environmental flows to preserve the natural hydrological regime.

All water management decisions are based on engineering assessments, scientific research, and the requirements of the water legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Therefore, claims that the project could lead to a shortage of drinking water in Almaty are not supported by scientific research, engineering calculations, or the official data of Almaty Su.
